The Designer Who Raced His Own Creation

From Sketchbook to Sahara: Testing the Primus Trail Flow in the World's Toughest Conditions

Can a barefoot trail running shoe survive 50km across the Sahara Desert?

At Vivobarefoot, every shoe begins with an idea. A sketch. A question. How can we create footwear that helps people move naturally while performing in the most demanding environments on Earth?

The journey of the Primus Trail Flow started in a designer's sketchbook, but its true test lay far beyond the studio.

When Product Design Meets Real Adventure

For Vivobarefoot Product Designer Val, designing the Primus Trail Flow wasn't enough. He wanted to experience the shoe exactly as it was intended to be used.

In our latest Research & Design film, Val takes on the challenging Ultra4Charity Tunisian Desert Race, tackling 50 kilometres of unforgiving Sahara Desert terrain while wearing the very shoe he helped create.

Unlike laboratory testing or controlled product trials, this was real-world performance testing in one of the harshest environments imaginable.

Primus Trail Flow was put through its paces across:

  • Deep desert sand
  • Extreme heat
  • Long-distance endurance running
  • Constant terrain changes
  • Physical and mental fatigue

The result was a unique opportunity to see how barefoot footwear performs when every design detail matters.

Why the Primus Trail Flow Was Built for Adventure

The Primus Trail Flow represents the evolution of natural movement for trail runners, hikers and outdoor explorers.

Designed to help your feet move as nature intended, it combines:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Flexible barefoot design
  • Superior ground feel
  • Durable off-road traction
  • Natural foot strength development
  • Freedom of movement across varied terrain

Rather than restricting the foot, the Primus Trail Flow allows your body to adapt naturally to changing surfaces, helping improve balance, stability and proprioception on the trail.

The Sahara Desert: The Ultimate Wear Test

The Sahara is one of the most demanding environments on the planet.

High temperatures, endless sand and relentless distances quickly expose weaknesses in both athletes and equipment.

For Val, this wasn't simply about proving a product specification. It was about understanding firsthand how design choices affect performance when conditions become extreme.

Every kilometre provided valuable insight into:

  • Foot comfort over long distances
  • Barefoot movement efficiency
  • Traction and grip performance
  • Breathability in hot climates
  • Durability under continuous stress

This direct connection between designer, athlete and product is a core part of Vivobarefoot's commitment to creating footwear that genuinely performs in the real world.

More Than a Shoe Test

What unfolded in the Tunisian Desert was about more than footwear.

It was a story of:

  • Human resilience
  • Natural movement
  • Endurance
  • Adventure
  • Purpose-driven design

The experience reinforced a simple belief: the best products are created when designers deeply understand the environments and challenges their customers face.
